Details Emerge in Weekend San Jose Police Shooting that Critically Wounded Suspect

Police in San Jose have released new details following a weekend incident where officers shot and critically wounded a suspect during a confrontation in East San Jose. The shooting, which occurred in the 2700 block of Kollmar Drive near Story Road and Capitol Expressway, has raised concerns about community safety and the increasing frequency of violent encounters involving police.

On Sunday, shortly after 4 p.m., officers were called to an apartment complex after receiving reports of a man firing a gun from a van parked in the lot. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Ricardo Villareal of San Jose, had reportedly blocked access to the parking lot and brandished a firearm at a mother returning home to her children.

Acting Chief Paul Joseph, speaking at a press conference on Monday, commended the officers for their bravery in responding to the dangerous situation. “Like countless times before, our officers responded selflessly, placing themselves between vulnerable people and a dangerous individual,” Joseph said.

Upon arrival, officers were fired upon by Villareal, prompting two officers to return fire. The suspect then reloaded his weapon and fled northbound through the apartment complex, continuing to shoot at the officers. Additional officers arrived at the scene, and Villareal opened fire on one of them. Another officer then shot Villareal, who was subsequently hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. An unregistered gun was recovered at the scene. The gunfire hit no officers.

Villareal, who has a criminal history including convictions for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, and a stolen vehicle, was on probation at the time of the shooting. Joseph highlighted the increasing risks faced by San Jose police officers, noting that 15 officers have been shot at in the past 15 months, with five being struck by gunfire. “The frequency of San Jose police officers being shot at or hit by gunfire has gone from a rare anomaly to a regular occurrence,” he said. “We cannot allow attempts of killing our officers to become normalized, expected, or tolerated.”
