Irvine, CA – An Irvine Spectrum theft investigation has led to an arrest after nearly $5,000 worth of tools and sporting equipment were reportedly taken from multiple unlocked vehicles at the popular Irvine shopping and entertainment destination.

According to the Irvine Police Department, the thefts occurred in early September at the Irvine Spectrum. Investigators later identified the suspect as 38-year-old Lemar Leang of Long Beach. Police located and arrested Leang on Tuesday. He was booked into the Orange County Jail on allegations including grand theft and drug-related charges.

The incident is another reminder of how quickly an unattended vehicle can become an opportunity for theft. In this case, the reported losses included tools and sporting equipment, with the total value approaching $5,000.

Vehicle Thefts Remain a Concern Across Orange County

While the arrest is a significant development in the Irvine Spectrum case, vehicle-related theft is not limited to one shopping center or one city.

The New Santa Ana report, citing state crime data, notes that larceny theft remains the largest category of property crime in Orange County. More than 10,000 thefts involving vehicles or vehicle contents were reported during the most recent reporting year analyzed by crime researchers using California Department of Justice data.

Five Orange County cities that have historically experienced some of the highest volumes of theft from vehicles include:

  • Irvine
With major shopping, entertainment, and parking destinations such as the Irvine Spectrum, the city sees significant daily vehicle traffic.
  • Anaheim
Tourism, entertainment venues, and busy commercial areas create large numbers of vehicles and parking spaces.
  • Santa Ana
As one of Orange County’s major urban centers, Santa Ana has a high volume of residential and commercial activity.
  • Huntington Beach
Popular attractions, shopping areas, and tourism bring large numbers of visitors and vehicles throughout the year.
  • Fullerton
Busy commercial districts, businesses, and public parking areas can also create opportunities for vehicle-related theft.

These cities have different communities and security challenges, but they share one thing: large numbers of vehicles, people, and properties that require consistent attention.

Security Starts Before a Theft Happens

Individual precautions matter, but property owners and businesses can also take proactive steps to make parking areas less attractive to criminals.

For shopping centers, parking facilities, businesses, and other high-traffic properties, mobile patrols and visible security guards can provide an additional layer of deterrence and oversight. SGS offers mobile patrol services for property checks and incident escalation, along with standing and unarmed guards who maintain a visible security presence on-site.

The goal is not simply to respond after something is stolen. A professional security presence can help identify suspicious activity, maintain awareness across a property, and address concerns before they escalate.

The Irvine Spectrum theft case serves as a timely reminder: prevention often starts with noticing the warning signs before a crime occurs.
